Cape Town is buzzing with great music to keep you warm – and this month is a treat for lovers of choral music, opera and symphonies!  And if you fancy abit of a roadtrip then you must head out to Hermanus for the annual Fynarts Festival filled to the brim with music, art, poetry and more.

Hermanus Fynarts takes place from 7 – 17 June filled with an exuberant celebration of creativity in all its forms – visual, musical, literary, culinary, performance. The programme is bursting with delights, from theatre and live music in every genre to art exhibitions, talks, workshops and food and wine experiences.

Fantasy & Metamorphosis
The Cape Town Concert Series 2024 presents acclaimed oboist James Austin Smith with pianist Luis Magalhaes.
The programme features works by William Grant Still, Clara Schumann, Brahms, Nielsen and more

SATURDAY 8 JUNE: STEELBAND FESTIVAL

The annual Cape Town Steelband Festival returns to the Baxter featuring bands from local schools and led by professional steelpan player and arranger, Dave Reynolds.

SATURDAY 8 JUNE: ST CECILIA MASS & MORE

The Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town presents an enthralling concert experience featuring a rich selection of choral and orchestral masterpieces, led by conductor Damian Philander and accompanied by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.
In addition to St Cecilia Mass the programme includes works by Parry & Schubert

Soloists: Ondelwa Martins (soprano), Sakhumzi Martins (tenor), and Thato Machona (bass)

CHORAL

SATURDAY 8 JUNE: THE CREATION
Under the baton of Dr Sjoerd Alkema and with soloists Elsabé Richter, Blaine Josephs, and Barend van der Westhuizen, Con Spirito Philharmonic together with the choir of Frank Pietersen Music Centre presents the monumental work of The Creation by Franz Haydn.

This epic choral and orchestral work vividly depicts the biblical account of the creation brought to life through Haydn’s innovative musical tone painting. For your enjoyment, the English text will be shown on PowerPoint.

FLAMENCO

SUNDAY 9 JUNE: PULSO!
Classical guitarists, Nina Fourie-Gouws and Michal George, join artistic forces with Flamenco dance sensation Ché Adams in ¡Pulso! This visually and auditory captivating production includes works by Albéniz, Boccherini, Brouwer, de Falla, Dyens, Granados and Torroba.

SUNDAY 9 JUNE: SACRED SONG

The Cape Town Chamber Choir, under direction of Antoinette Huyssen present an a cappella programme entitled Sacred Song.

The programme features some of the most beloved sacred choral works by German Romantic composers, Mendelssohn, Rheinberger, Reger & Grieg followed by a South African celebration including works by Huyssen, Klatzow, Hoffmeyr and van der Watt.

FRIDAY 14 MAY – 23 MAY: LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR AT ARTSCAPE
In celebration of Cape Town Opera’s 25th Anniversary, the company is restaging its first ever production – Lucia di Lammermoor – under the direction of the celebrated founder of Cape Town Opera, Angelo Gobbato. Gaetano Donizetti’s masterful opera tells the heart-wrenching tale of a doomed love affair set against a backdrop of family feuds and political intrigue. Featuring Cape Town Opera’s Fleur du Cap-winning stars Brittany Smith & Lukhanyo Moyake as well as the Cape Town Opera Chorus.

Kamal Khan will be conducting the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.
